Shuli Rand recent behavior has been very strange

Shuli Rand has become an enigma in recent days.

Last week he "disappeared" at some point and everyone was hysterical about what might have happened. Rumors surfaced before Shabbos that he is ok and his whereabouts are known (by certain people) and it is a private affair. Eventually he returned home, and his wife made different announcements, about forgiving him, about accepting him, about their personal situation, about being in major debt, etc. Some people started an online fundraising campaign to raise money to help the Rands. Bennet announced that he is giving Rand the Life Achievement Award that comes with a 150,000nis prize.

And now it has been made public that Shuli Rand was indicted last year for hitting someone in his family after an argument. Rand admitted to the charges and is awaiting the punishment stage of the court decision.

Will Bennet take the prize back because of this? Will all the people who made donations because they felt bad for the Rands regret their donations? Is there some way to cancel that campaign and not collect the money from the donors? This whole episode is very strange.

  1. Not a judgment, just a question. Do you follow Hilchos Loshan Hora here? I can't imagine what possible Heter there is for this

  2. I am not sure what halacha you are referring to. this is an item in the public news. By the fact that it is in the public news (on multiple sites), one can assume everyone knows about it and it is not lashon hara. that's the halacha as far as I remember it. correct me if I am wrong.

  3. You are incorrect. If I point that out to you in the Sefer Chfetz Chaim, will you cease to publish news like this? (Just want to make my research wothwhile)

  4. I would definitely look at it and see if I agree with your understanding

  5. Rafi is correct.
    Yedua lakol.

  6. leaving aside the lashon hara question, you also translated inaccurately. He was convicted of "grimat havala b'rashlanut" - i.e. negligently causing injury. Not "hitting" someone.

  7. Aside from the lashon hara issue, what exactly is the heter is to watch & post videos & pics that are megaleh erva & kol isha. (& warning that it contains such content is like saying "nisht ahf shabbos garett but...")

  9. No no no Chevra. Yehua Lakol is no answer. I found it (well i had to ask the wife because she knows these Halachos much better than me). You can find it in the CHofetz Chaim daily companion day 11 in English. In the Sefer Chofetz Chaim you can find it in Klal Beis, Chelek Gimmel. He is pretty clear.

  10. anon - I'll look it up soon. how does this fit with the concept of something that was said "b'apey tlasa" that is assumed to be known by all because it is assumed to be repeated by everyone and therefore not lashon hara?

  11. I am looking at it now and what I see in klal 2 paragraph 3 is the concept of something that was told over in front of 3 people is assumed to be known by everybody so if one of those 3 then retells it to others he has not transgressed lashon hara, because everyone already knows or will know and the torah did not prohibit what is going to become known to all - but this is only as long as your intention is not to spread it even further.

my understanding of this is as I said previously, that this is not lashon hara. I don't see what you said in the chafetz chayim's words.
