The Women of the Wall Chabadniks

I apologize in advance to Chabadniks who might be offended by my adding that description to the Women of the Wall....

Chabadniks are known for a lot of things. The thing they are probably known most for (and if not most it is surely pretty close to the top) is being tefillin missionaries. Wherever a Chabadnik might find himself he will walk around asking people if they are Jewish and if they have put on tefillin already that day or not - and if not, they will offer assistance in doing so.

The Women of the Wall, fresh off their victory in obtaining a compromise in which they are designated a section for egalitarian prayer along the Kotel are moving on to their next project..

The Women of the Wall have announced on their Facebook page that they will be hosting an event this coming Sunday morning at the Kotel in the women's section for people to join them and learn about the mitzvah of tefillin. There will be new sets of tefillin available for women (of all ages) who wish to learn and use them.

This seems to be in the regular women's section, rather than in the newly designated area. Perhaps the new section is not yet ready and available for them.

The next step is going to see them walking around the area offering women to put on tefillin as they walk by.

So, sorry Chabadniks, but it looks like the Women of the Wall might be moving in on your territory...

  1. IMHO, the new section will never be built. In reality, I understand that the new section is actually an expansion of the current Ezrat Yisrael which seems to be unused.
It seems that there are two different groups involved here - the non-halachic reform and some frustrated American women.

  2. Even ignoring the merits and demerits, I highly doubt that any group in the world can rival Chabad in their determination and persistence. Running that Tefillin booth is a lot harder than it looks.

  3. Not quite Chabadniks. Chabad are doing a Mitzvah. These misfits are chotim u'machtim, causing more sin.

  4. I didn't know what or expect it this soon, but I was expecting SOMETHING. If they don't have their monthly publicity grab any more, they needed to do something else to keep the cameras on them and their names in print.

  5. These women thrive on publicity, if only we could persuade the regulars at the Kotel to just ignore them, then people could daven without being disturbed, and maybe next month they wouldn't bother (of course that's not going to happen).

BTW - before they if they are teaching people about Tfilin, could someone please show them where the Shel Rosh is supposed to go, in almost all pictures of these women (including the picture in this post) their Shel Rosh is way too far down.

Is it possible that they are deliberately putting on Tfilin in a way not to fulfil the Miztva as they really know that there is no obligation for women to wear tfillin, and if a woman accepts it upon herself to wear tfilin (by doing it even once), she is obligating herself to put on Tfilin every day for the rest of her life - that is a big imposition. They would be far better off making sure that women do NOT put on tfilin once, just to try it out, but they can pretend by using Pasul tfillin, or by placing the tfilin in the wrong spot.
