Haredi woman drafted to IDF goes into hiding

a young Haredi woman, 18 years old, from Elad was picked up by the IDF a few days ago. She was turned into a soldier and was given a uniform. After the process was completed, they released her to go home, in uniform, after she signed a commitment to return with her personal belongings that she would need for her army service.

This happened because she failed to submit her forms requesting an exemption on religious grounds that pretty much any frum woman who legitimately (and by legitimately I mean if she is actually frum, which is not always the case) requests it is granted.

She never returned and has gone into hiding.

Since then there have been a lot of accusations and strong words thrown around about the IDF attacking the Haredi community, targeting sefardim, kidnapping a young haredi woman, threats of going to war over this...

I would suggest that the IDF was not looking to attack the Haredi community, nor to use this as a litmus test to see if it could get away with forcibly drafting Haredi women, nor to do anything out of the ordinary or with any hostility to the haredi or sefardi community. I would suggest that they sent their military police in to get her because, as far as they were concerned, she was AWOL and had avoided her draft notice. This is what they do to everybody who avoids the draft notice.

Women who submit their forms get out of the army with no difficulty. She did not submit her forms. When her name popped up on the computer screen in the Draft Board as being AWOL, were they supposed to know somehow that she is Haredi and that she should be given an exemption that she did not ask for?

How difficult is it to submit a form? All her friends were probably doing it at around the same time. her school probably told the girls what to do when they would get their notices. It is not like she did not know about the IDF draft or what she has to do to get her exemption. She simply did not do it.

Other people should take this as a lesson to not be so lazy or flippant about submitting their forms. The army makes it relatively easy to get out of army service, at least for religious women who want to. It is not their fault when a person does not follow the really simple procedure that is in place for such people.

  1. It doesn't matter. In the Charedi world, she'll be a martyr, and that's all that matters.

  2. She just increased her marriage prospects. Young charedi men are lining up for dates.
