is Bet Shemesh one step closer to opening a hospital?

Iryat Bet Shemesh has announced that it is heading towards opening a hospital. The announcement says that yesterday the mayor and other senior officials in Iryat Bet Shemesh met with medical and administrative representatives of Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center, and toured the premises.

The city people went to see the various departments and the new operating rooms.

At their meeting, Mayor of Bet Shemesh Moshe Abutbol told the Hadassah reps that the City has designated 120 dunam of land for the establishment of a medical center and are looking to connect to an existing enter like Hadassah. Abutbol detailed the growth of Bet Shemesh and the population fo the moshavim surrounding Bet Shemesh, explaining the importance of such a medical center in the area.

The Director of Hadassah explained that Hadassah is divided into two locations and both provide all the various types of treatments and that they have a desire to cooperate with Bet Shemesh on such a project and send doctors to service the community in such a center.

The headline of the original article makes it sound as if the opening of the hospital is already a done deal and this visit was to work out a partnership with Hadassah. I hope it is true, but I have a hard time believing that it actually is. Only time will tell.

  1. Could be that they'll think about a satellite facility. Run/staffed by Hadassah, but essentially doing only ED and outpatient clinic functions.

    1. Forgot to add: Hadassah is in such bad financial shape right now, I don't see them doing anything new in the near future.

  2. And if you think Shaare Tzedek is going to give up the lucrative income from ob/gyn and births from Bet Shemesh without a fight you're kidding yourselves. How can the mayor hook up with an institution whose kashrut the community discounts at best and rejects at worst? I wish the community the best. We need a hospital for emergency care and deliveries of newborns. We're still too small a community though, because the govt requires a facility serve 250,000 people. BS is still 100,000+ short, and the govt is essentially bankrupt on new medical care facilities spending. BS must follow the Herziliya and Ladiano model and build it ourselves raising our own money. I'm into it if others are.

  3. what mordechai said. why link with such a financial disaster as hadassah?

harold - it wouldn't be a problem for "hadassah beit shemesh" to use a mehadrin heksher. they'd have their own kitchen.

  4. regarding the financial situation I agree. I didnt mention it because I doubt Hadassah will be funding it. I imagine the government will be funding it, along with the local authority and private donation. My guess is Hadassahs cooperation is less in the financial realm and more in the administrative and medical.

regarding the kashrut and halachic issues, I see no problem. Regardless of what is done in Jerusalem, in bet Shemesh or anywhere else they can design the services to fit the demands of the local community. Regardless of that, the article itself says they met with the rav of Hadassah and he described how the halachic issues have all been well improved so even the haredi community would feel comfortable using their services. he details how the kashrut has gone all mehadrin, he talks about the improved eiruv, etc. I dont see this being any issue at all.

  5. Rafi, I don't think it is a matter of Hadassah funding the project. On some days they are barely functioning due to their ongoing financial woes. A satellite operation needs to be run by a stable organization. These days, that's not Hadassah. (How the mighty have fallen!)

If it is run as an ER and outpatient clinics, it won't be much to worry about things like kashrut.
